Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith was in town over the weekend to impart to young people including area children the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Smith, 66, said he was alarmed when he became aware of the effects of poor nutrition and health choices on children.
“About six years ago while I was in California, it came to my attention that kids as young as 10 years old were being prescribed high blood pressure medicine,” Smith said. “As a former educator and athlete, I realized the
need to increase my efforts to educate and promote healthy lifestyles through physical fitness.”
