Are Nationwide Protests Against Police Brutality And Violence Making A Difference? | News One

This past weekend protesters took to the streets for a national Day of Resistance for Americans to show solidarity with the #BlackLivesMatter#ICantBreathe and #HandsUpDontShoot movements.

On Monday, Roland Martin, host of “NewsOne Now,” and the Straight Talk panel (featuring Rev. Carlton LeeErika Totten and Michael Melton)  discuss the build up of resentment of how police have conducted themselves in the wake of the recent police shootings, what effect the protests are having and if the protests are leading to change in this country.

Wealth in Black America

Northern Trust’s second comprehensive look at the financial attitudes of wealthy black Americans reveals a charitable generation willing to give back to their families and communities.

If one item stands out in Northern Trust’s 2010 Wealth in Black America study, it’s the strong culture of philanthropy that exists among affluent black Americans. Survey findings reveal a tendency for affluent blacks to give to charitable organizations and financially support adult family members. These findings and more were unveiled in September at Northern Trust’s DreamMakers’ Forum®, a biennial conference held in Washington, D.C. for affluent blacks to discuss creating, preserving and transferring wealth.

Five Guys Named one of Best Fast Food Chains in the World

Best Fast-Food Chains in the World– America: Five Guys
This comparatively small American chain (750 locations), with a cheery red-and-white theme and open kitchens, excels at two things: made-to-order burgers with fresh beef on a squishy bun and hand-cut French fries. This limited focus and meticulous attention to detail has catapulted Five Guys to the top of the fast-food burger game, often beating rivals like In-N-Out and Shake Shack in taste tests or customer surveys.

5 Reasons Why Five Guys is a Big Success

A Recipe for Success

Sell a really good, juicy burger on a fresh bun. Make perfect French fries. Don’t cut corners. That’s been the business plan since Jerry Murrell and his sons opened Five Guys Burgers and Fries in 1986. Today, there are 570 stores across the U.S. and Canada, with 2009 sales of $483 million. Though we weren’t able to coax out his secret recipe, Murrell shares with us five things that helped him expand one lone burger joint into a national franchise.

Tommie Smith and 100 Black Men Team Up for Child Health

Olympic gold medalist Tommie Smith was in town over the weekend to impart to young people including area children the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Smith, 66, said he was alarmed when he became aware of the effects of poor nutrition and health choices on children.

“About six years ago while I was in California, it came to my attention that kids as young as 10 years old were being prescribed high blood pressure medicine,” Smith said. “As a former educator and athlete, I realized the
need to increase my efforts to educate and promote healthy lifestyles through physical fitness.”

Elite eats: Survey Names America’s Favorite Burger

Virginia-based chain Five Guys takes top honors among Zagat voters.
According to the latest Fast Food Survey by Zagat, the best burger in America comes from Virginia-based chain Five Guys.

The results of the survey were revealed live on TODAY Monday. The survey covered 136 fast-food and full-service chains nationwide. Voting on zagat.com, 6,518 voters weighed in on everything from chicken and cheeseburgers to smoothies and seafood. Full survey results are available at zagat.com/fastfood.

“I think the headline is Five Guys,” Zagat Survey CEO Tim Zagat told TODAY’s Ann Curry. “It’s a chain that has 500 outlets, but that’s small. But it’s growing.”
